Independence Day was packed with events and appointments, but started with the Ames Parade...the crowd was unbelievable! I really enjoyed the opportunity to walk the parade route, shake hands and join with members of the Sanders campaign contingent (pictured above) in handing out candy and other campaign trinkets. I must share with you that I was disappointed in a conversation I had with Wayne prior to the parade. As we were setting up our entry (Roger Underwood's 1926 Firetruck) I noticed Wayne and other D's a few spots behind us readying their float (a trailer towed behind Wayne's F150 with Wayne at the wheel). I went down to say "Hi" to Wayne and meet the ladies who were spending their holiday morning working to advance their political beliefs. After a brief, cordial exchange between Wayne and me, Wayne turned to the women and said " I would tell you something good about Rick, but I have not found anything yet". I was a bit surprised by his use of this tactic, but I am learning that it is simply Wayne's M.O. to try to belittle others in a joking manner. It is a shame that politics (especially at the local level) can be so adversarial. Ultimately, my hope is that this race between Wayne and me is decided based on the issues and the voters' determination of which one of us is best prepared and equipped to deal with those issues for all of Story County. For my part, I will continue to keep pushing the issues in a positive, non personal manner and make my case for better government to as many people as I can.
